03 Detail

About This Stretch of River

The reach between Ft. Randall Dam and Vermillion is one of the last genuinely free-flowing stretches of the Missouri. Braided channels wander between towering cliffs and rugged breaks that hold deer, turkeys, eagles and shorebirds. Sandbars and white sand beaches make natural stopping points for lunch or a swim, and the riverbed still holds the wrecks of steamboats that worked this water in the nineteenth century.
