Private land hunts focus on carefully scouted locations where birds are actively feeding, loafing and traveling. Depending on conditions, hunters may hunt over large decoy spreads in harvested grain fields, prairie wetlands, sheet water, reservoirs or river systems. South Dakota's position along the Central Flyway means a wide range of migratory birds through the season — Mallards, Pintails, Wigeon, Gadwall, Teal, Canada Geese, Snow Geese and White-fronted Geese are all common visitors depending on timing and weather. Guides continually scout fresh locations to stay on active birds and adapt to changing conditions.
Large river systems, prairie wetlands, agricultural fields and stock reservoirs create excellent habitat for both ducks and geese throughout the migration.
